That time my best friend, her sister, and I got stuck on a mountain
This story, like many others, starts the day before. I had taken the train down to the Gold Coast because my best friend, Nikki, and her sister, Shan, were renting a place there on Airbnb. When I met her at the coast, she told me she’d been kicked out of her Airbnb. I don’t know why. I didn’t ask. It’s Nikki.
We ended up just sitting at the beach with our suitcases until Diego (our close Colombian friend and savior) could pick us up and take us to his place. It was Diego’s birthday that evening, so we ended up partying really late.
The next morning Nikki, Shan, and I decided we’d split a cab up to Springbrook Mountain. That plan worked out really well — the cab was cheap and the air was crisp. Our good luck streak only lasted so long, though, because as we got higher up the mountain, our music started glitching. We got off at my favorite little lodge/café up the mountain and realized that we had no signal.
It didn’t take long for one of us to realize that we wouldn’t be able to book a cab back down without signal. By this point, Nikki and I had decided that with no way down, we might as well just enjoy the view in the present. I don’t know why we think like this. I don’t know why we do these things. If I knew why, we wouldn’t have ended up 3,000 feet up a mountain with no way down, now would we?
Anyway, Nikki and I went for a short “wellness walk” for 4 minutes and 20 seconds. On our walk we encountered a squealing Shan, who informed us that an Indian family (a dad and his little daughters) had seen her in absolute shambles at the table and had sympathetically offered to drive us down.
I’m not sure if it was Shan’s worried face or her chattering teeth, but these people were happy to drive us back down to civilization at no extra cost. Nikita did, however, provide them with some legal advice. I have no way of confirming its legitimacy — I just hope they weren’t paying attention.
All in all, we ended up having a pretty fun day and even got to watch the sunset at Broadbeach before heading back up to Brisbane.
This is a good story with a good ending. This in no way makes Nikki or myself sound stupid.
The End.
